How to make a scrunchie in 10 simple steps!

A cute lil’ accessory to any outfit, follow my guide to making your own scrunchie hair tie in less than 10 minutes!

1. Cut a piece of fabric that measures 50cm (width) x 10cm (height)

2. Lie fabric pattern side down on the table and fold in the long edges (width side) by about an inch (or less depending on how big you want the width of the scrunchie to be). Iron the folds flat.

3. Fold in half, folded edges facing outwards. Sew the raw edges together leaving a seam allowance of about ½ an inch. This will leave you with a loop of fabric.

4. Iron the seam flat.

5. Now, fold the fabric loop in half so that the patterned side is facing outward. Pin in place. You should now have a loop half the size of what you had previously.

6. Sew the fabric loop along the raw edge, leaving a seam allowance of a cm or so. Make sure you leave a small gap of about a cm between the start and end of your stitch line. We will use this gap to thread the elastic through in the next step.

7. Measure out a piece of elastic 20cm in length, or longer if you want the scrunchie to be looser/have more stretch. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic.

8. Use the safety pin to poke the elastic through the gap in your fabric loop and thread it through the fabric, making sure to hold onto the other end. As the elastic stretches the scrunchie should start to take its shape. When it’s threaded all the way through, poke the pin back out of the elastic, remove the pin and tie the two ends of the elastic together in a double knot. Poke the ends back inside the fabric.

9. Poke the ends back inside the fabric. Sew up the gap in the fabric and make sure to backstitch.

10. You’re done! You’ve made your very own fabric scrunchie J Tag me on Instagram under @shanna_ivy_louise to show me your creations!
